Our Health Prevails

It feels like it has become fall overnight. Last week I can remember walking outside and being hit with a wall of humidity and heat. Now, I’m wearing sweats, a sweater and sometimes house slippers in the morning. The passing of seasons was drastic and noticeable this year. I wonder if this apparent and rapid change in weather represents something else in our lives. Along with the rest of the state and mainland, we say goodbye to summer and welcome the fall. Pumpkin Spice lattes, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread. There’s so many reasons to be excited for October.
Here’s an update on our garden — I planted these seeds about a week ago, and they have emerged out of the soil (some more than others). The cucumbers sprouts are large and in charge!! While the yellow summer squash seeds haven’t even popped up yet. It was so fun to see all the differences in each vegetable seed. Different colors, sizes, shapes, textures, and now I’m finding out there is different sprouting time, sprout size, sprout shapes and color. Once more of them start to pop up, we will transplant them into the garden with the other veggies that are already thriving.
More than just our garden is thriving though. At the Beach Girl Jewels household, we’ve managed to not get the back to school sickness, flu, or cold. It is our daily practice to eat cultured veggies. These veggies have changed our life!! After fermenting in the cupboard for a week, the purple cabbage and orange carrots tie dye the rest of the veggies a beautiful pink. The teenage boys have learned that the powerful probiotic bacteria kicks any cold or sickness in the butt. I love seeing them reach into the fridge and pound a few spoonfuls of my special veggies.
